This project specifically involved the construction of a 500-Bedroom hotel which also included 3 themed restaurants, 24 meeting and function rooms, a health club and a swimming pool.

On a design and build project of this size in an airport environment and with an ambitious build programme, any construction contractor knows that it is very important to select the right specialist subcontractors.

Any organisation under consideration needs to possess the skills and resources necessary to complete the project within the allotted time frame and to budget.

These were obviously important criteria for Skanska when they were making their selections and when it came to Temporary Site Electrics they appointed Multitech for this element of work.

Having the skills and resources alone were not enough to ensure that Multitech were successfully awarded the project. The project team were looking for a company with a real understanding of the construction process, who were able to add invaluable design input prior to commencement and who saw their role as very much working in close support of the main contractor and their goals.

Once appointed, Multitech carried out the liaison and negotiation with The British Airports Authority BAA to obtain a suitable incoming power supply from which a comprehensive temporary electrical system was installed. This installation included the Specialist distribution equipment necessary to provide power services to, amongst other things, tower cranes, hoists, site transformers, pumped water systems as well as a site wide lighting scheme incorporating external metal halide floodlights and 110V fluorescent lighting within the building.

At Multitech’s suggestion, Skanska adopted an emergency lighting system independent from the larger installation. In doing this it meant that throughout the site, all lighting could be controlled from the main gate security position with the exception of some essential services and the emergency lighting, all electrical supplies to the site could be turned of at night and weekends. This meant that significant benefits could be gained in terms of both the environmental impact, energy cost savings and reduced maintenance expenditure.

The expertise of the especially competent management team at Skanska resulted in the project being delivered some seven weeks early - a quite remarkable feat, to which Multitech made a positive contribution at all times.

This particular project and the Project Director Mr. Bill Brock, were short listed for the prestigious Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Manager of the Year Awards, going on to win the coverted gold medal.
